The aim of establishing 001/B was to correct the inconsistent speed difference between the system and the plastic. In other words, the system was moving too fast to capture an acceptable amount of plastic. This was achieved by slowing it down with a parachute sea anchor. Another problem was prominent plastic overtopping, when some plastic crosses over to a space between the pipe and the screen. Minimal overtopping was achieved by designing a bigger cork line. After the capacity is reached, the plastic is returned to the land for recycling. Some researchers also claim that System 001/B could also be hazardous to floating marine life. However, Ocean Cleanup says it has not observed any entrapments of marine animals so far, and they have appointed continuously-present people to check the water while waste is being extracted.
