Solutions
Many solutions have been put in place by multiple organizations, and progress has been proven. As of January 2020, the first haul of waste ranging from discarded fishing nets to microplastics has been cleared and returned to shore. Based on current progress, The Ocean Cleanup, an environmental organization based in the Netherlands, states that it can clear about 50% of the patch in just five years. Even more ambitious, the project has goals to remove 90% of the ocean’s pollution by 2040. Even though this system showed early promises, there is still much work to do. The Ocean Cleanup is now designing System 002, a full-scale cleanup system that can endure and retain collected plastic for long periods of time.
