Other Methods
Conventional methods of clearing the ocean in the past have included vessels and nets. However, they take vast amounts of money and lots of time. The organization also designed an autonomous, solar-powered catamaran that works in juxtaposition with a barrier to scoop plastic out of water. This machine, called the Interceptor, is an attempt to stop pollution at the source, in the world’s rivers. The Interceptor is capable of extracting about 110,000 pounds of plastic in a day. These machines are already at work in Indonesia and Malaysia, but the organization strived to send Interceptors to 1,000 worldwide rivers by 2025.
